The Lamborghini Cheetah concept was arguably the first stab at creating an SUV for supercar producer Lamborghini, and while it never saw the light of day from a production standpoint, it was the beginning of a rich heritage of producing SUVs for Lamborghini.
In 1981, taking the spirit of the Cheetah and distilling it into a new form, Fiulio Alfieri introduced the Lamborghini LM 001. This SUV was atypical in that it featured a rear-mounted powertrain. Like the Cheetah, it would not reach production, however it gave rise to the LMA prototype. The LMA prototype, in turn, helped to inspire the tough, stylish, sporty Lamborghini LM002.
The Lamborghini LM002 was powered by a 450 horsepower V12 engine, boasted a light aluminum and fiberglass body, and plenty of offroad prowess. Thanks to special Pirelli Scorpion tires, a four-wheel drive transmission, transfer case, and three locking differentials the LM002 was truly every bit military-grade SUV as it was high-performance sports vehicle.
Next In Line: The New Lamborghini Urus
Building on a rich tradition of innovating with super-SUVs, Lamborghini has released a new 650 horsepower Lamborghini SUV, dubbed the Urus. Like Lamborghini SUVs of the past, the Urus is both performance-oriented and off-road-oriented. Unlike SUVs of the past, the Lamborghini Urus features a modern flair all its own, suited to current needs and desires.
